Nextel International Revenues Down on Currency Fluctuations

Nextel International (NII Holdings) has reported that its Q2 revenues dropped by 4% to US$1.06 billion, and a net income of $134 million, compared to $148.5 a year ago. Comparing the Company's results on a constant currency basis, revenues grew by 19%. During the quarter, the Company added 242,000 net subscribers to its network, bringing its ending subscriber base to 6.7 million, a 23% increase in the ending subscriber base compared to the end of the second quarter of 2008.  more

Chilean 3G License Tenders Tied - Bids to Commence in 60 Days

Two bidders for Chile's 3G license auction have tied on the technical submissions and will now proceed to a closed bid tender within the next 60 days, the regulator has announced. Only two bidders emerged for the three available licenses,­ Chilean cable-television and broadband operator VTR and Nextel Chile.  more

Chile Publishes Details of 3G License Tender

The Chilean telecoms regulator, Subtel has published the tender details for a round of 3G licenses, which it anticipates will bring a new entrant into the market. The auction for the licenses is due to be held in July, a notice on the regulators website announced.  more

Nextel subsidiary in trouble in Argentina

Nextel Communications Argentinean subsidiary, NII Holdings has missed a US$8.3 million loan payment to local creditors. The company is also late in making a payments on a vendor finance loan of US$382 million, although the creditor, Motorola has agreed not to take action if the late payments are made by Jan.22nd. NII is being affected by local restrictions on the amount that businesses can withdraw from their banks each day, making it difficult for them to pay their cellular phone bills. more

Nextel swaps debt for stock

The USA based Nextel Communications announced yesterday that it is exchanging US$857 million of senior debt of its Nextel International wireless unit for 21.6 million shares of Nextel common stock, now worth just US$274 million. Nextel will record an extraordinary gain on this transaction in its third quarter 2001 consolidated financial statements due to the substantial discount of the exchange relative to the book value of the senior notes. The swap cuts its debt load 5% as the company had about $17.3 billion of debt and $4.7 billion of cash and cash equivalents at the end of June. The company cancelled plans for an IPO in March due to the downturn in the telecoms stocks. The company operates an iDEN network in the USA and parts of South America." more
