U.S. Broadband Internet Speeds Lags behind Other Advanced Nations - report

Fixed line internet speeds in the USA have increased by only 1.6 megabits per second (mbps), from 3.5 mbps in 2007 to 5.1 mbps in 2009, reports the Communications Workers of America (CWA). At this rate, it will take the United States 15 years to catch up with current Internet speeds in South Korea, the country with the fastest average Internet connections.  more

While walking or driving, cell phones increase traffic, pedestrian fatalities

Cell phones are a danger on the road in more ways than one. Two new studies show that talking on the phone while traveling, whether you're driving or on foot, is increasing both pedestrian deaths and those of drivers and passengers, and recommend crackdowns on cell use by both pedestrians and drivers. The new studies, lead-authored by Rutgers University, Newark, Economics Professor Peter D. Loeb, relate the impact of cell phones on accident fatalities to the number of cell phones in use, showing that the current increase in deaths attributed to cell phone use follows a period when cell phones actually helped to reduce pedestrian and traffic fatalities. However, this reduction in fatalities disappeared once the numbers of phones in use reached a "critical mass" of 100 million, the study found.  more

Virgin Mobile USA Cuts 10% of its Workforce

Virgin Mobile USA has announced that it is cutting around 45 jobs - representing some 10% of its workforce, in its New Jersey and California offices. Nearly Half of US Motorists Use Mobile Phones While Driving

Nearly half of US drivers between ages 18 and 24 say they have sent a text message, instant message or e-mail while driving, according to a new survey by FindLaw. The survey found that 48 percent of drivers between the ages of 18 and 24, and more than a quarter (27 percent) of drivers 25 to 34, admit to texting while behind the wheel. Seventeen percent of all adults surveyed say they have texted while driving.  more

Virgin Mobile USA Outsources IT Management to IBM

Virgin Mobile USA has signed a services agreement for Information Technology (IT) operations and new applications development with IBM. Under the terms of the new services agreement, IBM will begin transitioning Virgin Mobile USA's existing IT infrastructure and application suite into its own environment. Simultaneously and continuing over the course of the next five years, IBM will work with Virgin Mobile USA to develop wireless applications and service offerings.  more

Drivers Support Hands-Free Laws - but Tend to Ignore Them

Tri-state drivers are not consistent about following their state's cellular hands-free driving laws despite the fact that three out of four (77%) drivers support it, according to a survey of 902 drivers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The study was commissioned by Parrot, a manufacturer of hands free car kits, and conducted by Harris Interactive.  more
