Alcatel wins Philippines contract
Alcatel has been awarded a US$100 million contract by the Philippines based GSM network operator, Digitel to increase the cellular mobile infrastructure capacity of Digitel's mobile subsidiary Sun Cellular to one million subscribers. It will provide them with the vital additional capacity to meet the growing demand for mobile voice and data services, primarily in the island of Luzon - the biggest island of the Philippines archipelago. The expanded network will be rolled out early 2004. more

Alcatel wins Afghan GSM contract
Alcatel has signed a contract for the supply of a complete solution for GSM infrastructure and services to the new GSM network, Roshan. The system is already operational in Kabul, and will cover the five main cities of Herat, Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kunduz by the end of 2003. This contract follows the January 2003 acquisition of the new Afghani GSM license by the international consortium TDCA (Telecom Development Company Afghanistan LTD) led by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) and Monaco Telecom International. more

Alcatel wins Middle-Eastern contract
Qatar Telecom (Q-Tel), the fixed and mobile operator of Qatar, has selected Alcatel's GSM900/1800MHz solutions to expand its GSM/GPRS-based mobile network nationwide, through the signature of three expansion contracts for a total value of US$30 million. Under these agreements, Alcatel will provide Q-Tel with base transceiver stations (BTS), base station controllers (BSC), mobile switching centers (MSC), a home location register (HLR), operation & maintenance controllers-radio (OMC-R) as well as a full range of professional services. Alcatel will also supply an Intelligent Network (IN) platform for value-added services and revenue-generating applications such as prepaid (PPS). more

Alcatel wins Tunisian GSM contract
Alcatel and Orascom Telecom Tunisia have signed a 5-year, US$125 million contract for the delivery of a new nation-wide GSM 900/1800 network in Tunisia. The first phase of the network installation will start around the cities of Tunis and Hammamet. When completed, the network will enable Orascom Telecom Tunisia to offer mobile voice and data services to over 500,000 subscribers. more

3G consortium focusing on UMTS formed by OPNET
OPNET Technologies, a provider of intelligent network management software, has announced the introduction of new modeling software specifically designed to evaluate and optimize 3G wireless technology. OPNET today also announced members of a new OPNET-sponsored 3G consortium with a mission to provide direction, recommendations and feedback for UMTS model development and implementation.
