Nepal Telecom Orders Satellite Capacity for Mobile Backhaul
Gilat Satellite has won a contract to provide Nepal Telecom with a SkyEdge broadband satellite communications network, offering rural internet coverage and also mobile backhaul facilities. Nepal Telecom Floatation Fails to Raise Expected Funds
The planned floatation of shares in Nepal Telecom may be in trouble after far fewer applications for shares were received than had been hoped for. Local reports, citing the Citizen Investment Trust (CIT), the issuing manager, estimated that NT received applications worth Rs 2.5 billion (US$40 million) - compared to the hoped for Rs. 15 billion (US$240 million). more

Nepal Telecom (NT) says that it plans to triple the number of Base Stations in the Kathmandu Valley in response to its subscribers' growing complaints about poor mobile phone connections. ZTE Wins Nepal GSM and 3G Contract
China's ZTE Corp. has been awarded by Nepal Telecom, a project that will help the telecom company to add 3.5 million lines to reach total GSM mobile capacity of 5 million lines within next three years. The project, which is the biggest ever embarked by NT, includes installation of new networks for GSM mobile phones services as well as 3G cellular networks based on W-CDMA protocol. more

The official Chinese news agency, Xinhua News has reported that Nepal Telecom launched a 3G network yesterday. According to Nepal Telecom director Buddhi Acharya, the SIM card for 3G service will cost 4,195 Nepali rupees (US$64.50) and its charges will be similar to that of prepaid mobiles. more
