Singapore dumps pagers for mobiles
Singapore's M1 has announced that it would terminate its pager service on 31 December 2003, more than six years after its launch. M1 will offer its approximately 22,000 paging customers the option to switch to M1 GSM. Customers who switch will be able to retain their pager numbers as their mobile numbers. more

SMS translates English into Chinese
Singapore's M1 has launched a new service the translates English SMS's into Chinese. The SMS Translator service allows the SMS message to be sent in English and within seconds, the recipient will receive a translated SMS in Chinese. All the sender of the SMS has to do is to key in the letters "EC" followed by the recipient's mobile number and the SMS message in plain English. more

Singapore network reports profits rise
Singapore's MobileOne has reported a profit after tax of S$68.8 million for the first half of 2003, representing an increase of 20% year on year. Profit after tax for first half of 2002 was S$57.1 million. EBITDA for first half 2003 was S$140.1 million, up from S$127 million for the same period last year. EBITDA margin on service revenue increased from 40% to 44% over the corresponding period. Operating revenue for the group increased by 6% to S$361 million for first half 2003. Free cash flow remained strong at S$104 million. more
Singapore offering videos over GPRS
Singapore's M1 has just added another "media" to multimedia messaging (MMS), by being the first to offer video clips on mobile phones. M1 was also the first to launch MMS in Singapore last year. The new service called Video Downloads enables M1 customers to download and enjoy video clips on their phones. More than 20 video clips each running between 10 and 15 seconds are available initially, featuring sports, fashion, lifestyles and trailers from "Oliver!" the musical. The number and variety of video clips will increase over time. more

The Singapore mobile operator MobileOne (M1) has signed an agreement with Nokia for the supply of a complete end-to-end multimedia messaging (MMS) system for its GSM network. Nokia will deliver and deploy the system as M1's preferred partner in MMS. Beyond the supply of network equipment and software, Nokia will dedicate resources on the ground in Singapore to prepare for M1's MMS launch. more
3G packet data call made in Singapore
The Singapore GSM network, M1 has made its first 3G packet data call utilising commercial 3G infrastructure. The company says that the call marks a significant phase of the roll-out programme for the WCDMA network that M1 started about a year ago. The WCDMA network is expected to be fully completed and ready for commercial launch in the second half of next year. The company says that factors such as the availability of 3G handsets will influence the eventual launch date. more

Singapore network raises 3G funding
Singapore's M1 has appointed ABN AMRO Bank as the lead arranger and underwriter for a 5-year loan of US$136 million which will be used to fund the initial 3G network rollout, as well as general operations. This loan will enable M1 to take advantage of the current low interest rate environment. more

M1 passes one million subscriber mark
Singapore's M1 says that it has just exceeded its 1 millionth customer mark giving it a current market share of around 35%. M1 has also reported a pre-tax profit of US$71 million in 2001, an increase of 64% over the previous year's profit of US$43 million. Sales revenue increased by 13%, from US$308 million in 2000 to US$346.6 million last year. more

Nokia wins GSM and 3G contract in Singapore
Nokia today announced a partnership with M1 in Singapore for the construction of a GSM1800 network to replace the current CDMA system and for the deployment of a full 3G system. Nokia will be the sole supplier for 3G technology. The new GSM1800 network, to be ready before the end of next year, will be 3G ready as the base stations for the network can be adapted to support W-CDMA. "M1 is expected to invest over USD290 (SGD500) million over the next five years, covering equipment and services," said Neil Montefiore, Chief Executive Officer of M1.
