NXP Propels NFC with World's First Industry Standard Chip

Semiconductor firm, NXP has unveiled what it says is the world's first truly industry standard Near Field Communication (NFC) controller, delivering a platform for handset manufacturers and operators to introduce NFC devices and services. The new NXP PN544 chip is based on the latest NFC specifications by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI).  more

Nokia Shows Off 3rd NFC Capable Mobile Phone

Nokia has shown off its third fully integrated Near Field Communication (NFC) mobile phone, the Nokia 6216 classic. The new arrival is Nokia's first SIM-based NFC device which enables operators to build NFC services on to the SIM card. The Nokia 6216 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2009 in select markets with an estimated retail price of EUR 150 before taxes and subsidies.  more

Operators to Launch NFC-Based Mobile Payment Services

Over the next several months, 12 mobile operators will run trials of contactless mobile payment services in Australia, France, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, The Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and the U.S. as a precursor to commercial launches. The trials form part of the GSMA's Pay-Buy-Mobile initiative, which is designed to provide a single global approach to enabling contactless payments using a mobile phone. Consumers will be able to use their handsets to quickly, easily and securely pay for goods and services in shops, restaurants and train stations.  more

Motorola Joins GSMA "Pay-Buy-Mobile" Initiative

Motorola has announced its intention to participate in the GSMA Pay-Buy-Mobile Initiative. Motorola will potentially participate in all trials facilitated by the GSMA which will drive forward developments on mobile payments. Motorola will also provide feedback to GSMA Near Field Communications Technical Guidelines white papers, and work with standardisation bodies such as ETSI and the NFC Forum to further provide input to the development process. more

GSM Association Aims for Global Point of Sale Purchases by Mobile Phone

The worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at point of sale is the aim of a new initiative announced by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organization for mobile operators. Mobile Content and Services Market to top $150 billion by 2011

Despite falling average revenues per user (ARPU) for mobile operators, the mobile content and services market will continue to grow dramatically as services and applications reach maturity and new services begin to gain traction, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. Mobile handset and network technology has now evolved to a point where true mobile web access is possible. Informa anticipates that by 2011, just under half of all mobile subscribers worldwide will use mobile browsing, a trend it sees developing with new operator offerings such as T-Mobile's 'Web n Walk' service and 3's 'X-Series' services. more
