Sicap Offers Device or SIM Based NFC Platform
Sicap has announced its ability to provision contactless applications indifferently to any device or SIM designed for NFC (near field communication) services. The battle by device and SIM manufacturers to bind operators to their technologies has until now hindered the launch of large scale contactless payment services, despite the incentives of a lucrative business model and a revolution in usage of the mobile phone. The main issue for operators is that conflicting interests have resulted in the NFC secure element, essential for bank transactions, being embedded either in the device, or in an SD (secure digital) card, or in the SIM. more

Thai Bank Trials Mobile Payments with NFC-Enabled Mobile Phones
Finland based NFC vendor, Venyon and Kasikornbank, a bank in Thailand are cooperating to evaluate contactless mobile payments in Thailand for a potential service launch in future. First SIMpass-enabled mobile phone launched in China
China Unicom has launched a mobile phone based payment service in the city of Chongqing which enables users to use their phone to pay for transport tickets and at various retailer for normal purchases. The 'Cqpass' is a multi-system mobile payment service first to use the SIMpass enabled custom-made mobile phone that was unveiled in Chongqing last month. more

BART Riders Embrace Paying with Mobile Phones – NFC Trial a Success
Earlier this year a select group of San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) riders took part in a first-in-the-nation trial to pay for their fares and food, receive discounts and check account balances using just their new mobile phone containing a contactless chip that enables transactions without a traditional plastic card. BART, First Data and ViVOtech has published the results of the trial conducted in the San Francisco area from Jan. 28 to May 30, 2008, which demonstrate high use when both transit fare and retail payments are combined in the same phone. more

Taiwan Mobile to Offer SIM based NFC Services
Smartcard firm, Gemalto has been chosen by Taiwan Mobile to provide the world's first commercial NFC (Near Field Communication) SIM-based mobile contactless system. The development is important as it avoids the need for customers to have to upgrade their handset, as they can simply get a new SIM card. This should make it possible for operators to speed up the rollout of the service - if they choose to. more
