The Fastest Growing Mobile Operators in Africa/Mid-East
The chart shows the fastest growing businesses in the MEA region over a twelve month view. The list includes nine of the names that feature in the Q1 08 list, with Zain Iraq coming in at Algerie Telecom MobileÃ's expense. The top two places are the same in the year as they are in the quarter, with TCIÃ's 9.12m just shading IrancellÃ's 7.95m. The other really strong performances in the region were spread across five main markets - with Mobily in Saudi Arabia taking third place ahead of two Egyptian companies, three from Nigeria and one each from Iraq and Kenya. more

Qatar Telecom Buys Control of Kuwait's Wataniya
Qatar Telecom has announced that it is paying US$3.7 billion for a controlling shareholding in Kuwait based, Wataniya, which has mobile operations in seven countries in the region. Qtel will acquire 51% of the share capital of Wataniya from Kuwait Projects Company Holding KSC (KIPCO) and other related parties as well as further and additional direct investments in its Algeria and Iraq operations for a total consideration of $3.7 billion. more

The Oman based GSM network operator, nawras has announced that a successful first 3G call was carried out on its mobile network. As part of winning the licence for the 2nd mobile operator in Oman in 2004, nawras was also awarded a 3G license, and already operates an EDGE network. At the nawras Board of Directors Meeting held yesterday, Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO of Qtel and nawras Board Member, carried out the first 3G video call using a 3G enabled mobile handset and calling Sheikh Saif Al-Maskery, nawras Chairman with a similar 3G phone. more
