Thailand 3G License Sale Could be Delayed Until 2010

Thailand's on/off process to issue 3G licenses seems to have hit the off-switch again with reports that the tender could be delayed until next year, with network launches not now expected until late in 2010. The secretary-general of the Office of National Telecommunications Commission, Suranand Wongwittayakamjorn told the Bangkok Post that "the much-awaited trial auction for 3G licences will now be put back to January, with licences being awarded by the first quarter of next year"  more

Thai Operator, AIS Plans US$600 Million Spend on 3G in 2008

Thailand's Advanced Info Service (AIS) plans to spend up to US$600 million on its 3G network during 2008, reports The Bangkok Post. Hui Weng Cheong, deputy president for wireless communications, told the newspaper that AIS would seek loans to fund the 3G network, with initial capacity of 10 million users or about 40% of its total customer base.  more

3G Licenses Awarded in The Philippines

The Philippines telecoms regulator, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is understood to have awarded four 3G licenses to local companies. Existing GSM operators, Smart, Digitel and Globe have been awarded a license along with new entrant, Connectivity Unlimited Resources Enterprises (Cure). The NTC still has a fifth 3G licence that is expected to be awarded shorty - no details have been given so far to explain the delay. more

Calls for PrePay phones to be registered in The Philippines

There have been calls in The Philippines for an existing order than requires all PrePay phones to be registered. The move is to assist crime prevention and also ensure that sales tax on the sale of top-up cards is actually collected. A former National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) commissioner, Joseph Santiago has called for the existing order to be enforced and dismisses claims that it would lead to increased cost for the networks which would be passed onto customers. Commenting on the fears of price rises, he said that the networks already encourage users to register their handsets though the use of competitions and special offers. more
