UK Publishes Proposals to Introduce Mobile Roaming for 999 Calls

The UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom says that it is planning to introduce automatic national roaming between the five mobile network operators for calls to the emergency networks. The regulator said that at the moment, mobile calls to emergency numbers can only be connected if the caller's own network is available in the area. This is a particular issue in remote areas and means that in some parts of the UK - particularly in Scotland and Wales - emergency mobile calls cannot be connected from certain mobile networks.  more

Vodafone Signs Tower Sharing Deal with NZ Communications

New Zealand's 3rd mobile operator, NZ Communications says that it has inked a deal with Vodafone to rent space on up to 116 of the rival operator's towers. The company has delayed its launch several times citing problems with securing locations for its base stations, so the move should help accelerate its network rollout.  more

Telefónica O2 Slovakia Says Now Operating 800 Base Stations

Telefónica O2 Slovakia says that it is now operating more than 800 GSM base stations, meeting a condition of its operating license. Its network is currently covering by signal 88 percent of population, which is nearly 2-times more than required by the license.  more

Further Delays for New Zealand's 3rd Mobile Network

New Zealand's third mobile operator, NZ Communications has again delayed its network launch - this time until late next year. The operator's most recent plan was to launch its network this coming October, but a report in the Business Day newspaper said that the company has only built 50 of the required 400 base stations it needs to launch services.  more

3 Italy Extends National Roaming Deal with Telecom Italia

Telecom Italia says that it has renewed its national roaming contract with Hutchison Whampoa's 3 Italia to provide 2G coverage for the operator. The contract is worth EUR280 million (US$440 million) over four years. Telecom Italia and 3 Italia have also struck a new SMS interconnection deal.  more
