Hungarian Mobile Subscriber Base Continues to Shrink
The Hungarian mobile market continued to shrink in May, though at a lesser rate than in April. At the end of the month, the three Hungarian mobile operators had a total of 11.912 million subscribers, which is nearly 79,000 lower than in April. The National Communications Authority (NHH) also noted that in May, the number of subscriptions per 100 people dropped to 118.9 from the 119.6 recorded one month before. more

Mobile Termination Rates to Fall in Hungary

Hungary to Award Two New Mobile Licenses
Hungary's telecoms regulator, the National Communications Authority (NHH) has issued a tender for two new 15-year mobile licenses and a 3rd tender for mobile infrastructure development. One of these new operators can obtain a frequency set similar to that of the three existing mobile operators. The other applicant is in competition for the authorisation to use the 450 MHz frequency range that is currently not in use. more

Celtel Buys Control of Ghana GSM Network, Westel
The pan-African operator, Celtel (a subsidiary of Zain/MTC) says that it has signed an agreement to acquire 75% of the GSM network operator, Westel from the Government of Ghana for US$120 million. The Government of Ghana remains a shareholder in Westel with a 25% holding through the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation. The offer price of $120 million includes an additional consideration of $15 million outright payment to cover the penalty fee of $25 million due to the National Communications Authority (NCA), an amount which would have been paid over an eleven-year period of the licence's lifespan. more

Hungary Mobile Subscribers Pass 9 Million Mark
Hungary's cellular phone market penetration nudged closer to the 90% mark after it reached 89.4% at the end of August and passed the 9 million mark, according to reports from the National Communications Authority of Hungary. The country now has just over 9 million subscribers recorded by the networks, although only 8.35 million subscribers are recorded as revenue generating.
