No sign of wireless downturn in North America yet
Independent Analyst Comment - Steven Hartley, Senior Analyst at Ovum
North America was the first region to be affected by the current economic
crisis and, to date, has been the hardest hit. Although the full effects of the
downturn are yet to be felt, the wireless operators' results in the third
quarter reflect how mobile services have become indispensable and two-year
contracts are protecting the sector in the region. Mobile telecom remains on
track to grow in the region in 2009.

US Mobile Market Remains Slow as Economic Concerns Mount

High Growth Forecasted for Western European Mobile Communications
A new European market report from Reportlinker notes that the sector has undergone enormous changes in response to regulatory pressure on roaming and interconnection tariffs, competition from numerous new start-up mvnos, and pressure on voice tariffs and bundled SMS offers which have lowered voice and data ARPU. The company says that revenue growth in coming years will primary depend on the continued increase in subscriber numbers and the use of multiple SIMs, and by the further adoption of rich-media services including music downloads and mobile TV. more

Japan's DoCoMo to Allow its First MVNO
Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ) and DoCoMo have announced a preliminary agreement under which IIJ will become the first mobile virtual network operator (mvno) to use DoCoMo's 3G network to offer corporate data communications services supported by DoCoMo's HSDPA technology. Details of actual operations are currently under discussion. more
