ZTE Wins German 3G MVNO Core Contract

ZTE has won a contract to build a 3G core network for German mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE), Vistream. ZTE says that it will provide a series of solutions to Vistream for a network capacity of 500,000 subscribers, including an all-IP platform, ATCA (Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture) hardware infrastructure and NGHLR (Next Generation Home Location Register) systems to construct a large a simplified GSM/UMTS core network.  more

DoCoMo Full-Year Profits Down 3.9%

Japan's NTT DoCoMo has reported a dip of 3.9% in its full fiscal year profits to reach ¥471.9 billion (US$4.93 billion), compared to ¥491.2 billion in the previous year. The average expected by analysts had been a rise in profits to around ¥499.5 billion, according to a Dow Jones Newswires report. Operating income saw a slight rise to ¥831 billion due to a decrease in cost of equipments resulting from decreased number of handsets sold.  more

Brazil Leads Lat-Am in Deployments, Connections and Demand for WiMAX and 3G Services

Signals Telecom Consulting has issued a commentary which notes that as from 2010 Brazil will account for the greatest number of WiMAX accesses in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, a position that it will keep in the medium term. Signals expects that the setting of regulations for the use of the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands, plus the tendering of new bands, will provide a strong impulse to this technology in Brazil. Signals foresees the entry into the market of large-scale operators such as Telefónica (via TVA), which will use WiMAX to expand its area of operation outside Sao Paulo, and SKY (DirecTV), among others, which will join the current efforts being made by Embratel and Neovia. Signals expects that operators will carry out their own development to be able to add their own last mile.  more

Israel Consults on Possible 3G Spectrum Auction

Israel's Ministry of Communications is to hold a public consultation to decide how to allocate a batch of unused 3G radio spectrum. The move has been prompted by a request from MIRS Communications after it was earlier blocked from bidding for WiMAX licenses.  more

Vodafone Sees Loss of UK Market Share and Lower ARPUs

The UK added over 3m new mobile connections during 2008, to take the total base to 75.75m, equivalent to 124% penetration. The market is one of the most competitive in Europe, if not the world, with five established MNOs and several mvnos, of which the most successful are Virgin and the increasingly ambitious Tesco.  more

India welcomes MVNOs

On Monday, the Indian government finally gave the go-ahead for mobile virtual network operators (mvnos) to enter the market. This follows a recommendation back in August 2008 from India's regulator, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The government is expected to release detailed guidelines for mvno entrants soon. We believe this approval will benefit both existing MNOs and new entrants.  more

Thai Operator to Push Ahead with 3G Network Rollout

Thailand's state owned operator, TOT has told the Reuters news agency that it will proceed with plans to deploy a 3G network, with a commercial launch due by the end of the year. The government has previously hinted that it will sell 3G auctions in the first half of this year.  more

Tele2 Switches Dutch MVNO to T-Mobile

Tele2 has announced the signing of a mvno (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) agreement with T-Mobile for both GSM and 3G mobile services in the Netherlands. Currently Tele2 is the largest mvno in the Netherlands with more than 450,000 mobile customers.  more
