Russia's MTS to Fully Merge with Comstar Subsidiary

Russia's mts has announced plans to buy the remaining shares in landline operator, Comstar that it doesn't already own for a total cost of US$1.03 billion in cash and stock. mts currently owns 61.97% of Comstar (64.03% excluding treasury shares) and consolidates Comstar in its financial results. As a result of the statutory merger, Comstar will be subsumed into mts and will cease to exist as a separate legal entity.  more

Digital dividend - France is paving the way for harmonised decisions across Europe

The French Government this week announced its decision to share 'digital-dividend' spectrum between both electronic communications and audiovisual services, following the recommendation of the Digital Dividend Parliamentary Commission published in July 2008. Analysts from Analysys Mason believes that this decision represents an important contribution to achieving a critical mass of users of mobile broadband services. If similar actions are undertaken by other Member States, it will also be a key step in reaching fully harmonised decisions across the EU.  more

Millicom Profits Rise - Plans Cuts in CAPEX for 2009

Millicom International has reported a 53% increase in its subscribers for Q3 08 versus Q3 07, bringing total subscribers to 30.6 million - along with a 27% increase in revenues for Q3 08 to US$869 million. Net profit for Q3 08 rose by 17% to $161 million, while BITDA increased by 25% to $369 million.  more

European Bank Lends to Brazilian Operator for GSM Expansion

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is lending a total of EUR 200 million to TIM Celular and its subsidiary TIM Nordeste for the expansion of their mobile digital communication networks in Brazil using 2G and 3G technologies. This represents the first project funded by the EIB to include Umts broadband technology outside Europe.  more

The trade body, 3G Americas has announced that the world now has 3 billion mobile phone users based on the GSM family (inc Umts), based upon research and projections by Informa Telecoms and Media. Today, 88% of the world's 3.5 billion mobile wireless subscriptions are to the GSM family of technologies.  more

UK Operators Sharing 3G Spectrum for Mobile TV Trials

Orange and T-Mobile UK have announced they intend to jointly pilot a new mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service in London using NextWave Wireless' 3G MBMS based TDtv solution. The pilot, scheduled for the second half of 2008, is designed to demonstrate how the cost of providing mobile TV services can be significantly reduced when mobile operators share widely-available unpaired 3G spectrum and a standards-based TDtv broadcast network.  more
