Russian Government May Be Preparing to Take Stake in Indian Operator

The Russian government is reported to be preparing to take an indirect stake in an Indian mobile phone network, local media reports have suggested. Russia's MTS Brand Expands into India

India's Shyam Telelink, which is controlled by Russia's Sistema has announced plans to use the brand-name of the Russian mobile network operator, mts in the Indian market. mts is itself 52.8% majority-owned by Sistema.  more

Russian Mobile Phone Retailer Sold to Oligarch

Russian billionaire, Alexander Mamut has brought the country's largest mobile phone retailer - Euroset, which controls about a third of the local market as well as having outlets in the CIS countries. The retailer was raided by police on two separate investigations last month - one related to claims of fraud and the other an alleged kidnapping by an employee several years ago.  more

Canada's Mobile Penetration Rate Rises to 61.6%

The Canadian mobile market had another quiet quarter, as operators prepared for the 2GHz spectrum auction. This saw most of the available bandwidth going to the three large players, Rogers, Bell and Telus, but no fewer than 12 new entrants acquired licences. In total, the aution raised CA$4.25bn. The new entrants include 9193-2962 Quebec Inc (CA$554m, for Quebec), Globalive Wireless, which paid CA$442m for a national licence, Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises which won licences for Ontario, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Victoria at a cost of CA$243m and Shaw Communications, which paid CA$190m for spectrum in British Colombia, Alberta, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and northern Ontario.  more
