Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry structure for communications equipment.  more

Base Stations Bring Electricity to Rural Villages

Three rural villages in Armenia's Gegarkunik region have been connected to the mains electricity supply - as a result of the mobile operator, VivaCell-mts requiring a power supply for its base stations in the region. VivaCell ran high voltage power cables to its Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), and then ran extra power supplies to an electricity sub-station (power transformer) in each of the villages.  more

Ubiquisys First to Support Impending 3G Femtocell Standard

Ubiquisys says that it became the first femtocell vendor to announce its commitment to the 3GPP's emerging Iuh interface, providing standardised communications between femtocells and the gateways in mobile operators' networks. Ubiquisys will support this interface in its products ready for the planned approval of Iuh in December 2008.  more
