Digital dividend - France is paving the way for harmonised decisions across Europe

The French Government this week announced its decision to share 'digital-dividend' spectrum between both electronic communications and audiovisual services, following the recommendation of the Digital Dividend Parliamentary Commission published in July 2008. Analysts from Analysys Mason believes that this decision represents an important contribution to achieving a critical mass of users of mobile broadband services. If similar actions are undertaken by other Member States, it will also be a key step in reaching fully harmonised decisions across the EU.  more

Eastern European Operators Turning to Mobile TV for New Revenue

Since 2005, mobile operators are noticing a steady depreciation of average revenue per user (ARPU). The reality is the European mobile market is saturated with over 100 percent of its population owning mobiles. Revenue growth strategies rooted in acquiring new customers are rendered ineffective. As a result, providers scrambled for state of the art services and applications for mobile devices. Headed by Italy, Europe found success with this infotainment solution. By late 2007, 2.6 million Europeans were already using mobile TV. Now the future of the mobile market in Eastern Europe rests in the growing popularity in mobile TV.  more

Italian Mobile Communications: Market Ready to Face New Challenges

Italy has the highest 3G penetration in Europe and 3Italia achieved over 700,000 subscribers for its Mobile TV service by August 2007. Now iPhone is taking centre stage over the Umts networks of mobile operators TIM and Vodafone. "This looks like it's a done deal and if it is the case, then it just goes to show that between the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 Italy has been a hotbed for mobile communications" says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Saverio Romeo.  more
