Brazil Leads Lat-Am in Deployments, Connections and Demand for WiMAX and 3G Services
Signals Telecom Consulting has issued a commentary which notes that as from 2010 Brazil will account for the greatest number of WiMAX accesses in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, a position that it will keep in the medium term. Signals expects that the setting of regulations for the use of the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands, plus the tendering of new bands, will provide a strong impulse to this technology in Brazil. Signals foresees the entry into the market of large-scale operators such as Telefónica (via TVA), which will use WiMAX to expand its area of operation outside Sao Paulo, and SKY (DirecTV), among others, which will join the current efforts being made by Embratel and Neovia. Signals expects that operators will carry out their own development to be able to add their own last mile. more

Canada Sees Lowest 4th-Quarter Gain Since 1997
Despite the fact that the Canadian mobile market is probably the least developed in the Western world, with a penetration rate of just 63.9% at the end of 2008, it performed poorly in the fourth quarter of the year. Quarterly net additions stood at just under 410k, down from 580k in Q4 07. In fact, this was the smallest fourth-quarter gain since 1997. More worryingly still, this was the first year since 1990 that fourth-quarter net additions were not the highest of the year: the Q3 08 increase was more than 27% higher than the Q4 08 figure at 520k. more

Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel
Opinion piece by Dana Cooperson and Matt Walker, analysts at Ovum
On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.
