Increasing Deployment of UMT at 900Mhz
The pace of commercialisation of Umts 900 systems has quickened, according to a new Information Paper published by GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association. The report notes that for the same service offering and coverage, the number of base station sites in the 900 MHz band can be reduced by 60% compared to that needed for 2100 MHz, and reduce rollout time. more

Motorola to Include LTE Spectrum Bands in First Commercial Product Release
Motorola has announced that its first commercial release of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) solutions next year will now also include products for the 700MHz and 2.6GHz spectrum bands. The timing for commercialization of products in specific frequency demands will be based upon a combination of general radio spectrum licensing trends globally as well as individual customer demands. more

Top 20 Operators in Asia-Pac: Bharti overtakes DoCoMo, India Gains Ground
The mobile markets of the Asia Pacific region continues to grow in importance. In Issue 99, we reported the fact that at the end of September, there were 20 networks in the world with more than 30m customers, of which eight were in this region. Those eight included the two largest - China Mobile and China Unicom - as well as the seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, 13th and 20th. Just three months later, there are now 23 networks that have passed the 30m mark and nine of these are now in the AsiaPac region, including four from India. Of the nine, four now have over 50m customers, the other two outside China being Bharti from India and DoCoMo from Japan. Together, the nine have a total of 831m customers, or just under 25% of the global market. more

UK Operators Sharing 3G Spectrum for Mobile TV Trials
Orange and T-Mobile UK have announced they intend to jointly pilot a new mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service in London using NextWave Wireless' 3G MBMS based TDtv solution. The pilot, scheduled for the second half of 2008, is designed to demonstrate how the cost of providing mobile TV services can be significantly reduced when mobile operators share widely-available unpaired 3G spectrum and a standards-based TDtv broadcast network. more
