Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells

Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Further to this, the research demonstrated that femtocells can dramatically reduce the growing financial costs made by heavy mobile broadband data users on the mobile network.  more

Canada Sees Lowest 4th-Quarter Gain Since 1997

Despite the fact that the Canadian mobile market is probably the least developed in the Western world, with a penetration rate of just 63.9% at the end of 2008, it performed poorly in the fourth quarter of the year. Quarterly net additions stood at just under 410k, down from 580k in Q4 07. In fact, this was the smallest fourth-quarter gain since 1997. More worryingly still, this was the first year since 1990 that fourth-quarter net additions were not the highest of the year: the Q3 08 increase was more than 27% higher than the Q4 08 figure at 520k.  more

Global Mobile Market to Exceed US$900 Billion in 2008

A report from IDATE says that the world telecom services market is estimated at US$1,365 billion in 2008 - a 4.2% increase over the year before - and is expected to be worth over US$1,416 billion in 2009. With a total turnover estimated at US$742.2 billion in 2008, mobile services account for 54% of the telecom services market and single handedly deliver all of the sector's growth. But the annual growth rate has dropped from more than 12% in 2007 to 8% in 2008.  more

Russia's Penetration Over 125% and No Sign of Stopping

The Russian market surpassed 125% penetration during Q3 to finish the quarter on 126.9%, but growth showed no sign of slowing: in fact, the annual growth figure of 14.5% was up 0.7pp compared to the prior twelve-month period. With 179.81m customers, Russia remained the fourth largest market in the world, around 87m behind the USA and 39m ahead of Brazil.  more

Rogers Leads for Canadian Quarterly Net Subscriber Growth

The Canadian mobile connection market stood at 21.25m at the end of Q3 08, equivalent to a penetration rate of 63.0%. Annual growth has been stable at between 8.2% and 9.0% for the past five quarters and the Q3 08 figure of 8.7% was exactly the same as the year-earlier figure, although given the low penetration level this is not exactly an impressive performance. Perhaps the launch of Orascom's network - scheduled for spring 2009 - will energise what is a decidedly sluggish market.  more

Canada's Mobile Penetration Rate Rises to 61.6%

The Canadian mobile market had another quiet quarter, as operators prepared for the 2GHz spectrum auction. This saw most of the available bandwidth going to the three large players, Rogers, Bell and Telus, but no fewer than 12 new entrants acquired licences. In total, the aution raised CA$4.25bn. The new entrants include 9193-2962 Quebec Inc (CA$554m, for Quebec), Globalive Wireless, which paid CA$442m for a national licence, Data & Audio-Visual Enterprises which won licences for Ontario, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Victoria at a cost of CA$243m and Shaw Communications, which paid CA$190m for spectrum in British Colombia, Alberta, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan and northern Ontario.  more

MTS Canada Q2 '08 - Wireless Revenues Up Despite Drop in ARPUs

mts, which operates a CDMA network in the state of Manitoba, surpassed 400k customers during the second quarter of 2008 to finish June with a total of 408.4k. This represents a 10.6% gain over the year-earlier figure of 369.4k. mts's customer growth has been extremely consistent over the past four years, the rolling annual customer growth rate having remained between 10% and 12% in all but one quarter (12.4% in Q3 06). By contrast, quarterly growth is highly prone to seasonality, with the fourth quarter accounting for the lion's share of new customers. Q4 07 was particularly strong with an uplift of 4.5%, the best result since Q4 01, but this seems to have had a knock-on effect on growth in 2008: the Q1 figure of 1.4% was the lowest for five years, while Q2 growth of 2.2% was the lowest second- quarter gain ever recorded, albeit by less than 0.2pp.  more
