World's First Femtocell Standard Published by 3GPP

Three trade bodies, The Femto Forum, 3GPP and the Broadband Forum have jointly announced that the world's first femtocell standard has been officially published by 3GPP, paving the way for interoperability between different vendors' access points and femto gateways. The new standard, which forms part of 3GPP's Release 8, and interdependent with Broadband Forum extensions to its Technical Report-069 (TR-069), has been completed in just 12 months following cooperation between the three groups.  more

Voice over LTE Initiative Launched

A group of leaders in the wireless industry comprised of Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, Kineto Wireless, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nortel, Samsung, Starent Networks, T-Mobile and ZTE have announced a joint effort, referred to as the Voice over LTE via Generic Access (VoLGA) Forum. The joint effort aims to define a set of specifications within the forum for enabling delivery of voice services over LTE access networks based on the current 3GPP Generic Access Network (GAN) standard.  more

Femtocells – to Be or Not to Be?

Although mobile operators are increasingly optimistic about femtocells, there are many doubts circulating around this new technology as it struggles to resolve key challenges such as functionality and cost. Operators believe that they are capable of cutting costs and retaining more customers, but proof remains to be seen. In the last femtocells study, Frost & Sullivan is skeptical, outlining multiple challenges, that do not look like they could be resolved by the end of 2008.  more

Mobile Wireless Infrastructure Market Grows 13% in Q1 2008

Synergy has issued a report which shows the worldwide mobile wireless infrastructure market has climbed 13.1 percent year over year. The fastest growing market segment was Mobile Softswitch, which grew 43.8 percent year over year, followed by Umts equipment, which increased 27.3 percent year over year.  more

Ubiquisys First to Support Impending 3G Femtocell Standard

Ubiquisys says that it became the first femtocell vendor to announce its commitment to the 3GPP's emerging Iuh interface, providing standardised communications between femtocells and the gateways in mobile operators' networks. Ubiquisys will support this interface in its products ready for the planned approval of Iuh in December 2008.  more

Huawei and Qualcomm complete Europe's first MBMS field trial

Huawei and Qualcomm have jointly announced the completion of Europe's first MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) field trial, carried out in conjunction with Telecom Italia. MBMS technology is based on 3GPP standards and supports multicast and broadcast services, allowing speeds of up to 256kbps on a mobile device.  more

Aeroflex Launches 3G LTE Test Platform

Aeroflex has introduced a LTE test mobile designed to address the challenges of 3GPP LTE network infrastructure development test and rollout. The TM500 LTE incorporates test, logging and measurement features at all layers of the protocol. This includes MIMO tests to verify that the network appropriately handles the MIMO related signaling and correctly applies the MIMO modes, which can be realized with or without the need for an external fading simulator.  more

UK Operators Sharing 3G Spectrum for Mobile TV Trials

Orange and T-Mobile UK have announced they intend to jointly pilot a new mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service in London using NextWave Wireless' 3G MBMS based TDtv solution. The pilot, scheduled for the second half of 2008, is designed to demonstrate how the cost of providing mobile TV services can be significantly reduced when mobile operators share widely-available unpaired 3G spectrum and a standards-based TDtv broadcast network.  more

Radiocomp Aims to Deliver Remote Radio Heads for 3GPP LTE

Denmark based, Radiocomp says that it aims to deliver the world's first commercially available remote radio head (RRH) for 3GPP LTE to its OEM customers during the second half of this year. The new LTE RRH will follow the successful first deliveries of RRH units for 3.5 GHz mobile WiMAX first half this year.  more
