Macedonia Offers Additional 3G Licenses

Macedonia's telecoms regulator, The Agency for Electronic Communications has announced plans to award three additional 3G licenses through a public tender. The licenses will be valid for just ten years - which is shorter than is usual for most countries which tend to award fifteen-year licenses.  more

MTS Expands Russian 3G Coverage

Russia's Mobile TeleSystems (mts) says that it has launched 3G networks in Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, bringing the total count of cities covered to ten. mts launched the first pan-regional 3G network in Russia in May 2008 in St. Petersburg followed by Sochi, Yekaterinburg and Kazan. In August 2008, mts expanded its 3G network to Nizhniy Novgorod. In September 2008, the Company brought next-generation networks to Novosibirsk and Norilsk, the two large industrial centers in Siberia, and Vladivostok, the largest city in the Russian Far East.  more

Germany to Auction Off Additional 3G Radio Spectrum

Germany plans to launch a second round of 3G auctions sometime next year, with a wider spectrum range than in the original auction. The second auction will be open to both new entrants as well as the incumbent operators, who have complained in the past that the earlier auctions did not offer sufficient spectrum for them to deliver data intensive services.  more

Siberia Gets its First 3G Services

Russia's mts has become the first operator to offer 3G coverage in  Siberia and the Russian Far East after it expanded its network to include Novosibirsk, Norilsk and Vladivostok. The Company says that it intends to launch 3G networks in at least 14 cities during 2008 and in up to 40 cities in Russia through 2009.  more

Belarus Planning 3G License Auction

It has been reported that Belarus is planning to award 3G licenses in the near future. The BBC Monitoring service, citing a report by the Belapan news agency said that new entrants to the market would be allowed to bid for the licenses.  more

French Operators Authorised to Offer 3G at 900Mhz

French telecoms regulator, Arcep has approved applications by Orange and SFR to offer 3G services in the 900Mhz. Third 3G license holder, Bouygues Telecom says that it will apply for an amendment to its license to reuse its 900Mhz spectrum in 2009.  more

UK Operators Sharing 3G Spectrum for Mobile TV Trials

Orange and T-Mobile UK have announced they intend to jointly pilot a new mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service in London using NextWave Wireless' 3G MBMS based TDtv solution. The pilot, scheduled for the second half of 2008, is designed to demonstrate how the cost of providing mobile TV services can be significantly reduced when mobile operators share widely-available unpaired 3G spectrum and a standards-based TDtv broadcast network.  more

ArmenTel Granted 3G License in Armenia

Russia's VimpleCom has announced that its Armenian subsidiary, ArmenTel have been granted a 3G license in Armenia. VimpleCom recently increased its holding in ArmenTel to 100%. The license covers the 1920-1935 MHz and 2110-2125 MHz bands. The company also recently lost its monopoly on providing landline services and new entrants are expected to be granted licenses later this month.  more
