India's Aircel Reported to be in Talks to Buy Loop Mobile

India's Aircel Cellular is reported to be in talks to buy Mumbai based Loop Mobile (formerly BPL Mobile), which is owned by the Ruias of the Essar group. Both companies have been holding discussions for around seven months now, two people familiar with the discussions told the Economic Times.  more

India's BSNL Planning 3G Launch Across 700 Cities

India's state-owned operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) intends to expand its 3G network to 700 cities across the North and East of the country by June. A second wave of launches in the South of the country will follow in July. Ericsson is BSNL's partner for 3G roll-out in over 400 of these cities.  more

BPL Mobile Passes 2 Million Subscriber Mark

India based mobile operator, BPL Mobile - which covers just the city of Mumbai - has announced that it has passed the 2 million subscriber mark. BPL Mobile, in the past few months have substantially grown in their subscriber base, from 1.3 Million in March 2008 to 2 Million in January 2009. The net additions percentage share of BPL Mobile in the past 5 months has been at an average of 22%, much above the other operators.  more

Will 3G Launch Revitalise India's MTNL

mtnl recorded its best ever third-quarter figure for net additions in the three months ending 31s t December 2008, Q3 of its 2008/9 financial year. The gain of 229k took its total customer base over the 4m mark to 4.07m at the end of the quarter. mtnl is one of the smaller operators in India, the world's second largest mobile market by customer numbers, and it had an end- quarter national market share of just 1.2%.  more

More Delays to India's 3G License Auction

There has been a further delay to India's already oft-delayed 3G license auction, after the Indian Cabinet decided to refer the issue to a Group of Ministers (GoM) to adjudicate on. The Department of Telecom (DoT) and the Finance Ministry have been battling over the reserve price which would apply to the auction.  more

3G Phones Bypass Jammers in Indian Parliament

A failure in the specifications for equipment designed to block mobile phones working inside the Indian Parliament resulted in 3G based phones starting to work last week after mtnl installed a 3G base station in the vicinity of the building.  more

India's 3G License Auction Confirmed - Starts Jan 16th 2009

India's government has finalised the plans for its 3G and WiMAX auctions - with the 3G auctions starting on January 16th next year. Auctions for WiMAX licenses will commence two days after the 3G licenses are sold.  more

Indian Network "Soft-Launches" 3G Coverage in Delhi

India finally launched a 3G network today as state-controlled operator, Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (mtnl) launched a WCDMA network in the capital city, Delhi. The company is only offering a "soft-launch" though, and coverage is limited to the main business and political districts, Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhawan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate, and Minto Road.  more

Claims that India May Delay 3G License Auction

There have been unconfirmed reports that India's 3G license auction could be delayed until next year after the government found that it had not cleared the necessary radio spectrum in nine of the country's 22 circles.  more

India's state owned mobile operator, BSNL will launch its 3G network in the north-eastern states and Chennai by January 2009, Communications and IT Minister A Raja has announced. The second state owned network to have a 3G license, mtnl is still on target to launch its 3G network in Delhi and Mumbai.  more
