India's Aircel Reported to be in Talks to Buy Loop Mobile

India's Aircel Cellular is reported to be in talks to buy Mumbai based Loop Mobile (formerly BPL Mobile), which is owned by the Ruias of the Essar group. BPL Mobile Passes 2 Million Subscriber Mark

India based mobile operator, BPL Mobile - which covers just the city of Mumbai - has announced that it has passed the 2 million subscriber mark. BPL Mobile, in the past few months have substantially grown in their subscriber base, from 1.3 Million in March 2008 to 2 Million in January 2009. The net additions percentage share of BPL Mobile in the past 5 months has been at an average of 22%, much above the other operators.  more

Further tariff cuts in India

Following the intensification in competition in the Indian cellular phone market this week, Command and Spice Telecom have both reduced their tariffs. The two networks offer service in Kolkata (former Calcutta), and a new entrant, BSNL began operating a GSM network there this week. However, BPL Mobile, which offers service in Mumbai has said that its focus will not be on cutting prices, but offering improved services. "We will compete by offering more value-added services and by offering GPRS services to our customers." said Mr Girish Rangan, CEO, BPL Mobile. He refused however to say exactly when the GPRS service would be launched. mtnl is due to start offering service in Mumbai shortly." more
