Can BSNL and MTNL be turned around?

­While the Indian telecom industry is experiencing high growth and private sector operators are posting impressive results, performance of the two state owned operators - namely BSNL and mtnl - continues to decline. As state owned entities, these two operators get preferential treatment from the government. Nevertheless, they fail to take advantage of such a treatment. One of the recent examples is dismal uptake of 3G service launched by these two, despite being the only operators in India with 3G spectrum.  more

India's MTNL Expects Up to 300,000 3G Subscribers by Year-End

India's Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (mtnl) has set a fairly wide target of between 200,000-300,000 3G subscribers by the end of the year, the company's chairman and managing director said at a press conference to launch a new PrePay tariff. India's Aircel Reported to be in Talks to Buy Loop Mobile

India's Aircel Cellular is reported to be in talks to buy Mumbai based Loop Mobile (formerly BPL Mobile), which is owned by the Ruias of the Essar group. India's BSNL Planning 3G Launch Across 700 Cities

India's state-owned operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) intends to expand its 3G network to 700 cities across the North and East of the country by June. A second wave of launches in the South of the country will follow in July. Ericsson is BSNL's partner for 3G roll-out in over 400 of these cities.  more

BPL Mobile Passes 2 Million Subscriber Mark

India based mobile operator, BPL Mobile - which covers just the city of Mumbai - has announced that it has passed the 2 million subscriber mark. BPL Mobile, in the past few months have substantially grown in their subscriber base, from 1.3 Million in March 2008 to 2 Million in January 2009. The net additions percentage share of BPL Mobile in the past 5 months has been at an average of 22%, much above the other operators.  more
