MTN Nigeria Stretches Market Lead as Glo Consolidates 2nd Place

­Nigerian regulator the NCC has released statistics for the second quarter of 2009, revealing that the total customer base stood at 66.42m at the end of June. Annual growth stood at 32.8%, the lowest rate for eight years, although with penetration edging towards 50% (Q2 09: 46.9%) such a slowdown is to be expected.  more

Nigeria's Bullish Growth Continues in Fourth Quarter

Nigeria's telecoms regulator the NCC has reported customer numbers for the fourth quarter of 2008. The total customer base reached 62.99m at the end of the year having increased by 55.9% annually. On a quarterly basis, net additions stood at 7.15m, only just short of the national and continental record of 7.38m, set in Q2 08.  more

Nigeria's Second Best Quarter for Subscriber Growth

Nigeria's Q3 08 growth could not match the record-breaking levels seen in the previous quarter, when 7.38m new connections were added - more than double the best figure recorded in any other African nation. However, its third-quarter boost of 4.11m was the second best figure ever recorded in the market, which is particularly impressive given that one of the top three operators, Glo, suffered a loss of 0.6m customers in the quarter. At the end of Q3, there were 55.8m connections in Nigeria, up 51% year on year with annual net additions of 18.8m.  more

Nigerian Operator Subscriber Base Slumps Following Recount

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently began releasing information on the number of active subscribers in Nigeria, and as a result we have adjusted the figures in The Mobile World Database to give a more accurate depiction of the market. This was a crucial revision, not least because the NCC reported a rapid rise in the inactivity level in the final quarter of the year: from 15.9% at the end of Q3, it reached 26.9% at year-end.  more

Nigerian Operators Banned from Promotional Adverts

Nigeria's telecoms regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has imposed a blanket ban on all the GSM network operators banning them from adverts which rely on promotional tools to attract new customers.  more

Nigeria Celebrates Six Years of GSM Mobile Phones

It has now been six years since GSM was introduced to Nigeria, and the telecoms regulator, the NCC has published a review of how telecoms in the country has changed since those first mobile phone licenses were sold. Prior to 2001, the number of connected phone lines in the country before the introduction of GSM services was a mere 450,000 for an estimated population of 120 million at the time and the level of investment in the telecommunications sector was just about US$50 million only. more
