MTN Nigeria Stretches Market Lead as Glo Consolidates 2nd Place
Nigerian regulator the NCC has released statistics for the second quarter of 2009, revealing that the total customer base stood at 66.42m at the end of June. MTN Group Half Year Profits Up 22%
South Africa based mtn Group has announced that its first-half revenue rose by 24.2% to R57.3 billion (US$7.3 billion). EBITDA rose 24.8% to R24.5 billion (US$3.1 billion) from June 2008. The Group subscriber base was also up 14% to 103.2 million from December 2008. more

Nigeria Regulator Secures Deal to Launch Stolen Phone Database
Nigeria's two largest mobile network operators, mtn and Zain have agreed to sign up to a centralised stolen handset database after a funding agreement was brokered by the telecoms regulator. The Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) service provider, Netvisa GSM Secured will operate the database independently of the operators. more

Zimbabwe's Telecel Says Not Selling Stake to MTN
Zimbabwean mobile network operator, Telecel says that it is not planning to sell a stake to South Africa's mtn. There had been recent rumours that mtn was looking at buying a stake in a Zimbabwe company, and that Telecel was the lead candidate. The rumours were heightened when the company took a stand at a trade fair in the country in April. more
