Zimbabwe's Telecel Says Not Selling Stake to MTN

Zimbabwean mobile network operator, Telecel says that it is not planning to sell a stake to South Africa's mtn. There had been recent rumours that mtn was looking at buying a stake in a Zimbabwe company, and that Telecel was the lead candidate. The rumours were heightened when the company took a stand at a trade fair in the country in April.  more

Nokia Losing Mobile Internet Traffic Market Share in South Africa

Mobile ad agency, mKhoj has reported that the market share of mobile internet traffic from Nokia handsets in South Africa has dropped from 46% in January to 39% last month. Samsung currently holds 33% of the market, and rose from 20% in January. The iPhone made its entrée into the market, but only contributes 0.06% of the total network traffic, making it a relatively small but growing player.  more

South Africa's mtn has decided to close an anniversary SMS competition early after it became increasingly mired in controversy. MTN Says No Significant Financial Impact on Iran Subsidiary

South Africa's mtn has denied reports that its Iranian subsidiary would lose at least a months worth of operating income due to the ongoing political strife in the country. Zimbabwe Network Seeks to Expand Coverage

Zimbabwe's smallest mobile network operator, Telecel says that it is planning for a significant expansion of its network coverage. The company says that it has already boosted capacity thanks to upgrading existing base station towers. Telecel Zimbabwe is owned by Egypt's Orascom Telecom.  more

MTN restarts merger talks with India's Bharti

India's Bharti Airtel has resumed merger talks with South Africa's mtn - after they broke down last year. Under the proposed terms of the deal, Bharti would acquire a 49% shareholding in mtn and, in turn, mtn and its shareholders would acquire an approximate 36% economic interest in Bharti, of which 25% would be held by mtn with the remainder held directly by mtn shareholders.  more

Telkom Refutes MTN Claims of Network Problems

South Africa's dominant landline operator, Telkom has rejected the claims made last week by mtn's Managing Director, Tim Lowry, where he blamed Telkom - in part - for the mobile network operators quality of service difficulties.  more
