Four Firms Bidding for Rwanda's 3rd GSM License

Four Companies Interested in Rwanda's 3rd Mobile License
Rwanda's government is moving closer to inviting bids for the country's third mobile network. Speaking at his regular presidential press conference last week, President Paul Kagame said that four companies have already expressed preliminary interest in the license. The four companies were named as Zain, Korea Telecom, Orascom and an unidentified Israel company. more

Redknee Solutions has announced that an East African alliance of mobile operators, led by Kenya's Safaricom, has chosen its Mobile Money Services for its international prepaid roaming top-up service. The alliance, consisting of six East African operators including Safaricom, MTN Uganda, Vodacom Tanzania, MTN Rwanda, UCOM (Burandi) and Uganda Telecom, together serve an estimated 13 million subscribers. more

Kenya's Safaricom has expanded its "free roaming" service, Kama Kawaida to include Rwanda - with MTN Rwanda. This comes eight months after the successful launch of Kama Kawaida in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Early in the year, Safaricom, Vodacom Tanzania, and MTN Uganda offered its customers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania the opportunity to move freely across the three countries as they would on their home network. more
