Four Firms Bidding for Rwanda's 3rd GSM License
Four companies have been shortlisted to bid for Rwanda's third mobile license, the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) has announced. Thirteen companies had purchased tender documents from the regulator, but most chose not to submit a formal bid. more

MTN Increases Investments in Uganda and Ivory Coast
South Africa's MTN has announced that it has increased its shareholding in MTN Uganda to 84.44% from 52.01%, converting the joint venture operation into a fully consolidated subsidiary of the Group. This follows the successful acquisition of a 32.44% stake purchased from Swedish telecom giant, Overseas Telecom for EUR130 (US$166) million. Overseas Telecom is 65%-owned by TeliaSonera. more

MTN Reports 20 Million Subscribers
South Africa's MTN Group has reported that it now has over 20 million subscribers. The company also reported that its revenue increased by 25.2% toUS$2.6 billion, excluding the revenue contributed by the new acquisitions, revenue increased by 22.3%. EBITDA rose to US$1.1 billion and adjusted profit after tax to US$644 million. Says Phuthuma Nhleko, MTN Group CEO: "We are satisfied with our performance and progress during the period under review. The MTN Group has entered a new growth phase, having maintained shareholder value and secured three new operations." more

MTN buys two more African operators
South Africa's MTN Group says that it is to buy two GSM networks in Cote d'Ivoire and Zambia. The MTN Group has entered into an agreement to acquire a 51% stake in Loteny Telecom, trading under the name Telecel Cote d'Ivoire. Telecel Cote d'Ivoire is one of two operators in Cote d'Ivoire. The operation has in excess of 800,000 subscribers and an estimated market share of 46%. The transaction is subject to minor conditions, however, regulatory approval has been obtained. more
