New GSM License Awarded in Uganda

Uganda's telecoms regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has awarded a mobile operators license to Warid Telecom. The license is only for one year however, suggesting that it is a temporary agreement which presumably will lead to a formal license later next year.  more

MTN Increases Investments in Uganda and Ivory Coast

South Africa's MTN has announced that it has increased its shareholding in MTN Uganda to 84.44% from 52.01%, converting the joint venture operation into a fully consolidated subsidiary of the Group. This follows the successful acquisition of a 32.44% stake purchased from Swedish telecom giant, Overseas Telecom for EUR130 (US$166) million. Overseas Telecom is 65%-owned by TeliaSonera. more

Network Audit for Ugandan Operator

Omnitele says that it has been contracted by Uganda Telecom (UTL) to perform a GSM radio network audit and international benchmark of its network. UTL is the biggest communications company in Uganda, offering solutions in mobile, landline, data, data storage, disaster recovery and internet applications. UTL was privatised in 2000. Currently the major shareholder is UCOM Ltd (51%) and the Government of Uganda 49%. UTL has operated a GSM network in Uganda since 2001 in a competitive environment. As UTL thrives to provide the best service quality to its subscribers, Omnitele was called on to perform a GSM radio network audit and to make suggestions on how to further optimise and improve network performance. more

Top-Up Ugandan PrePay Phones from Overseas

MTN Uganda has launched a facility that enables overseas residents to top up PrePay accounts for their family and friends back home. This was announced at the official launch of MTNWeb2u, a new product that now enables MTN customers to receive airtime via internet. Ericsson to Deliver IP Core Network to MTN Uganda

MTN Uganda has chosen Ericsson to supply and roll out its IP core network in cooperation with Cisco Systems. For MTN Uganda, this is an initial step towards migrating today's network to a multi-service network capable of carrying large and growing volumes of voice and data traffic. In the initial phase, Ericsson will provide a multi-service core network solution based on the Cisco 12000 Series routers, and Ericsson's end-to-end solution experience and related support services backed by Cisco Technical Support Services. more

MTN Reports 20 Million Subscribers

South Africa's MTN Group has reported that it now has over 20 million subscribers. The company also reported that its revenue increased by 25.2% toUS$2.6 billion, excluding the revenue contributed by the new acquisitions, revenue increased by 22.3%. EBITDA rose to US$1.1 billion and adjusted profit after tax to US$644 million. Says Phuthuma Nhleko, MTN Group CEO: "We are satisfied with our performance and progress during the period under review. The MTN Group has entered a new growth phase, having maintained shareholder value and secured three new operations." more
