Expanding Mobile Phone Information Service for Rural Famers

­The Grameen Foundation is to expand its Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) initiative in Uganda, supported by a $4.7 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The initiative is building a self-sustaining, scalable network of rural information providers who use cell phones to help close critical information gaps facing poor, smallholder farmers. They will strengthen the information link to poor farmers by disseminating and collecting relevant information in these underserved communities.  more

Missing MTN Engineer Claimed to be Still Alive

The mystery of an MTN engineer who vanished in Uganda nearly four years ago took an unexpected turn when it was recently claimed that he had been kidnapped by security services. Andrew Ndawula, the MTN engineer reportedly overhead sensitive communications between security officials in Kampala and the crew of the ill-fated helicopter which crashed and killed the Vice President of Sudan, John Garang.  more

Motorola Wins Ugandan Mobile Data Optimisation Contract

Motorola says that it has won a three-year, multi-million dollar network optimization services contract with mobile operator MTN Uganda. A specific area of focus will be on improving MTNĂ's packet data network performance, throughput and capacity of the networks.  more

Four Firms Bidding for Rwanda's 3rd GSM License

Four companies have been shortlisted to bid for Rwanda's third mobile license, the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) has announced. Thirteen companies had purchased tender documents from the regulator, but most chose not to submit a formal bid.  more

Ugandan Investment Fund Seeking Stake in Local MTN Operations

Uganda's National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is reported to be in talks with MTN's local mobile operations to take a stake in the company. The Business Power newspaper, citing unnamed sources said that the talks are pretty much at a very primary stage, but early indicators of a possible outcome appear positive.  more

Four Companies Interested in Rwanda's 3rd Mobile License

Rwanda's government is moving closer to inviting bids for the country's third mobile network. Speaking at his regular presidential press conference last week, President Paul Kagame said that four companies have already expressed preliminary interest in the license. The four companies were named as Zain, Korea Telecom, Orascom and an unidentified Israel company.  more

East Africa's telecom market has great opportunities for growth

Over 450 telecommunications professionals gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania for the opening of East Africa Com, the region's annual event for the telecommunications industry. The conference started with a keynote presentation from Bashar Arafeh, Celtel International's COO for the East Africa region, who was keen to point out that "East African markets, being currently under market average, hold plenty of room for growth."  more
