Lebanon Delays Mobile Network Privatisation - Again

Lebanon's government has again decided to delay the oft-delayed privatisation of the country's two state owned mobile phone networks. Another Delay to Lebanon's Mobile Network Privatisation

89.8% of Lebanon's GSM users report using SMS

A new Arab Advisors' survey of Lebanon's cellular users provides insightful analysis into this idiosyncratic telecom market that is slated for liberalization and privatization. The survey found that 12.8% of Lebanon's GSM users share their phone lines with other members of their families. This indicates pent-up demand for cellular services in Lebanon. This bodes well for the country's mobile penetration which is below regional levels.  more

Motorola Wins Lebanese Upgrade Contract

Motorola, in collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Telecommunications, has announced the upgrading of the MIC2 network, operated by MTC. Commenting on the announcement, Roula Abou Daher, chief technical officer, MTC Touch, said: "We have already launched prepaid SMS roaming services for Lebanon-based customers while they are visiting Saudi Arabia, and we're about to make the service available in other countries in the very near future." more

Siemens Wins GSM Contract in Sudan

Siemens Communications says that it has signed a global frame agreement with MobiTel Sudan, part of Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) Group, to supply 2.5G radio wireless infrastructure in a deal worth EUR20 (US$25.2) million. more

MTC Denies Staff Arrest Claims over Lebanese PM Assassination

Last Tuesday, the Information Division of the Lebanese Interior Security Services visited the offices of the GSM network operator, MTC Touch in Beirut, as part of their investigation around the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafic Hariri. MTC Touch says that it demonstrated full cooperation with the investigating team by putting their human resources, records and all the necessary information requested at the disposal of the investigative team. more
