Over 2,000 people protested in the capital city of the African country of Togo over the weekend after the government shut down a mobile phone network. Atlantic Telecom Facing Loss of Togo Operating License
Atlantic Telecom is reported to be facing the suspension of its network in Togo after failing to renew its operating license. The operator's license expired in June 2008, and has been given until 10th August to pay a 20 billion CFA (US$44 million) renewal fee. more

Intec Wins Billing Contract in Ivory Coast
Billing systems provider, Intec says that it has signed a deal with moov Côte dÃ'Ivoire, a subsidiary of Atlantique Telecom, to supply an Interconnect billing solution. moov is the mobile brand name of Atlantique Telecom whose minority shareholder is Banque Atlantique of Côte dÃ'Ivoire and the majority shareholder Etisalat. more

Benin Operator Restarts Services After Shut-Down
The Benin based mobile operator, "moov" is reported to have resumed services in the country after its license was suspended by the regulator in July. The Areeba/MTN network is understood to still be suspended. Both operators have been accused of breaking their operating licenses by changing their brand names, and the regulator was using the opportunity to massively hike the cost of the licenses before it would allow them to resume services. more

Benin Regulator Threatens to Shut-Down GSM Networks
South Africa's MTN has been hit with a retrospective 600% rise in its license fees in the African country of Benin, and is now facing having its network shut down by the regulator. Benin's Telecommunications Regulation Authority is reported to have suspended the operating license of both MTN, and rival operator Atlantique Telecom saying that the companies had adjusted their commercial names without permission. more
