Operator News in Brief - 30th Nov 2009
The former CEO of Russia's VimpleCom, Alexander Izosimov has been named as
the head of the newly enlarged Bermuda registered VimpleCom Ltd., which now
includes the combined Ukrainian assets of Telenor and Altimo
China Unicom has entered into a mobile banking partnership with China's sole
payment service network, China Unionpay. The two firms will develop e-commerce
services in addition to enabling Unicom subscribers to access Unionpay's
platform for making payments and transfers to participating banks.
The Telekom Austria Group has tapped Ericsson to upgrade its networks in
Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Liechtenstein, Serbia and
Slovenia, according to market needs. Rollout has already started, which includes
an IP-based microwave transmission network, a management system and related
integration and support services.
Croatia's Vipnet says that it has expanded its HSPA+ network to cover the city
of Osijek. In addition, this is the first city to be fully covered by a HSPA+
upgrade, which offers a theoretical download speed of up to 21 Mbit/s.
South Africa's Cell C has a launched a competition based promotion to encourage
prepay customers to register their details with the operator in compliance with
new laws. Every registered user goes into a prize draw and will win a cash sum
equivalent to their own phone number - e.g. R8,431,266.10.
Moldova's moldtelecom has announced the sucessful testing of its WCDMA based 3G
network. The operator's General Manager, Vitalie Iurcu said that the network
would aim to launch in the first quarter of next year. The network will
initially cover Chisinau and Balti, and then expanded to other cities.
Israeli network, Pelephone has shut down its old analogue network after securing
permission from the Ministry of Communications. The Motorola supplied NAMPS
network was some 25 years old and had just 300 customers remaining on it.
Bell Canada has announced the launch of the MiFi 2372 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot
from Novatel Wireless. The MiFi 2372 operates on Bell's new HSPA network and
offers simultaneous Wi-Fi connectivity for up to five devices or users.

Moldovan Mobile Market has Strengthened in Q3 2009
Moldova's mobile telecoms market has seen a 3.24% rise in revenues over the past nine months compared to a year ago, reports the local telecoms regulator. Sales were estimated at Leu 202.77 million (US$18.35 million). more

Modovia's Moldcell Launches 3G Services
Modovan mobile operator, Moldcell has commercially launched its 3G network. The company started construction of its 3G network in June, although it was not actually granted a license until earlier this month. The company is reported to have spent around US$11 million on its 3G network infrastructure, which was supplied by Ericsson. more

Moldova Planning 3G License Sale
Moldova's telecoms regulator, ANRCETI has announced plans to sell 3G licenses in the 1900-2025/ 2110-2200 MHz frequency bands later this year. The regulator has set a fee of US$8 million for each license which will last for 15 years. more
