Vodafone Reported to Have Brought Out Controversial Shareholder

It has been reported by local media that Vodafone has brought out its controversial minority shareholder in its Kenyan subsidiary. The Daily Nation newspaper reported that Vodafone may have paid as much as Sh6 billion (US$100 million) for the stake in its local holding company held by mobitelea.  more

Safaricom Full-Year Profits Drop 23%

Kenya's Safaricom has seen a twenty-three percent fall in its full year profits to Kshs 10.54 billion (US$136 million), from Kshs 13.85 billion (US$179 million) in the last fiscal year. The company said that the drop was due to increased depreciation in line with the increased capital investment. Revenues however were up by 14.8% to Kshs 70.5 billion (US$910 million).  more

Serious Fraud Office Calls Off Vodafone Investigation

The UK's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has called off its investigation into Vodafone's shareholding in Kenya's Safaricom - citing a lack of resources for the decision. Kenyan MPs Call For Delay in Safaricom Privatisation

Opposition MPs in Kenya's new unitary government have called for the Safaricom sale to be postponed pending a review of the valuation of the company and its shareholders. ODM secretary general Anyang' Nyong'o said the sale should be delayed because of numerous questions regarding the firm's ownership and to comply with a privatisation law enacted in 2005.  more

Safaricom IPO Confirmed for Next Week

The floatation of Kenya's Safaricom has resumed following the calming down of the political turmoil over the past few months. The floatation of a 25% stake held by the government will now occur on March 28th, with share trading starting on the Nairobi stock exchange in June.  more

Safaricom Announces Record Profits and Stock Market Floatation

Kenya's Safaricom has reported a 40 percent jump in profits to Ksh17.19 billion (US$258.6 million) and said that it expects to have over 8 million subscribers by the end of this year. The Kenyan government has also said that it will carry out its long delayed sale of part of its holding in the company on the Nairobi Stock Exchange. The government has previously said that it may also consider a dual listing in another country to boost investment. more

Fraud Office Investigating Vodafone Investments in Kenya

Two investigators from the UK's Serious Fraud Office are reported to be in Kenya at the moment, investigating alleged changes in Vodafone's shareholding in the local mobile phone network, Safaricom. It is commonly thought that Vodafone owns 40% of Safaricom - but recent media reports in the UK and Kenya have identified a mystery co-investor who seems to own part of the shareholding generally attributed to Vodafone. more
