Belgium network reports subscriber rise
Belgium's mobistar says that it finished last year with 2,615,368 active customers registered, compared with an active customer base of 2,305,390 at the end of 2002. This translates as a net increase of 309,978 active customers, or a growth of more than 13% in one year. The last quarter of the year was particularly optimistic with mobistar witnessing a net increase of 107,120 active customers in three months. more

Euro operator claims top search spot
After signing a contract with T-Mobile in Germany, United Kingdom, and Austria, the French start-up company MotionBridge says that it has become European market leader in the field of mobile search and navigation. With over 40 million search requests, the company has by far the largest audience in Europe. MotionBridge is being funded by Siemens Mobile Acceleration since August 2002 and has been steadily increasing its customer base, serving operators such as Orange in France, mobistar in Belgium, O2 in the UK, and now T-Mobile. The company's next goal is to launch their product in the Japanese market next year. more

France Telecom controlled Orange has unveiled a widely expected refocus in an effort to boost earnings and says that it will team up with a group of rival operators to create a marketing rival to Vodafone. The company is starting a process of centralising its processes, in order to work as a single company, as opposed to a series of individual networks. The new organisational changes will see a more global approach to policy to ensure the Orange Group operates consistently and effectively. The Orange Group will take a more centralised approach to those areas where it makes clear business sense to leverage its size and strengths. This structure will give Orange transparent internal reporting of all financial, marketing and customer data. more

Code of conduct for MMS content providers
In the light of the development of SMS and MMS information and entertainment services,Belgium's mobistar and Proximus, have presented a code of conduct intended for providers of these services. This code of ethics sets out a series of rules and recommendations aimed at ensuring that mobile operator customers receive better information and protection. This code will be appended to contracts concluded between operators and service providers. more

Changing cell phone use in Belgium drive tariff changes
A study conducted recently by the market survey company INRA at the request of Belgium's mobistar shows a very marked trend in the use of different means of telecommunication by Belgian households. A few major trends were identified. Belgians have more than one mobile phone per household and they are increasingly eliminating fixed lines in favour of mobiles, or they are opting for a complete range of equipment: one or more mobile phones, a fixed line and a fast Internet connection. mobistar also found that mobile phones had become a veritable link between family members. In response to these trends, as from 28 August, mobistar is offering a new formula specially designed for families, mobistar Family, based on the principle of sharing monthly call time between all members of the family. more
