Egyptian Mobile Networks Face Legal Action Over Government Shut-Down

­The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information has filed a complaint with Egypt's Prosecutor General, demanding an investigation into the Minister of Communications, as well as the CEOs of mobile phones companies mobinil, Etisalat and Vodafone along with the CEOs of ISPs LINKdotNET, TE Data "for criminal liability in participation in harming and killing demonstrators by cutting off Internet and telecommunication services in Egypt arbitrarily."  more

Egypt's Mobile Phone Networks Restored - Rumours of Further Planned Outages

­Egypt's mobile phone networks have been able to resume their services after being ordered to shut-down their networks on Friday. Vodafone, France Telecom controlled mobinil and UAE based Etisalat owned, Etisalat Misr were all ordered to block their networks in selected areas throughout the country.  more

Arab Region Nears 200 Million Mobile Subscribers

A new report from Arab Advisors Group has found that Arab telecom operators served 194.5 million cellular subscribers and 35 million mainlines by end of June 2008. The report noted that STC's Al Jawwal, Egypt's mobinil and Vodafone Egypt are the largest Arab cellular operators in terms of subscribers.  more

Nigeria Overtakes South Africa as Largest African Market

Nigeria overtook South Africa to become the MEA region's largest market in Q1 and it has further stretched its lead in the latest period, passing the 50m milestone and ending the quarter with 51.7m mobile connections. This makes it the 18th largest market in the world. South Africa - which is now nearly 100% penetrated - has less than one third of Nigeria's population (44m v 138m) and is likely to drop into third place soon. Iran - with a population of more than 70m - has moved from sixth to third over the course of the last year and is adding customers four times as quickly as the RSA.  more

Egypt Q2 2008 - Vodafone Sees Market Share Decline

At the end of Q2 08, the number of mobile connections in Egypt reached 33.86m, equivalent to a penetration rate of 41.5%, up from 28.5% a year earlier. The second-quarter performance was a definite improvement on Q1: Q2 saw 9.8% growth compared to 6.6% in Q1, while on an actual basis, the Q2 figure of 3.01m quarterly net additions was the second highest ever recorded behind the Q3 07 figure of 3.33m. Annual net additions stood at 10.99m, again the second highest figure on record.  more
