Orascom Telecom Q2 Profits Down 64%
Egypt based Orascom Telecom has reported a 64% slump in second quarter profits to US$80.8 million, considerably worse than financial analysts had expected. The drop was put down to slowing growth in Bangladesh and Pakistan along with higher financing costs and a US$30 million write down of its Algerian landline subsidiary. A drop was expected due to the removal of a one-off gain a year earlier. more

Mobinil to Launch 3G Network in September
Egypt's mobinil is reported as saying that it expects to finally launch its 3G network on the 1st Sept 2009. The company had expected to receive access to the radio spectrum on 17th January, but the radio frequencies were not released until March 27th. The company had hoped to launch its network last month, but again missed its deadline. more

Mobinil Delays 3G Launch Due to Radio Spectrum Delays
Egypt's mobinil has announced plans to delay the launch of its 3G network due to delays in allocating the necessary radio spectrum by the regulator. The company is also delaying the paying of its EGP750 million installment for the license by ten weeks due to the regulatory delay. more

Egypt Q3 '07 Market Update - Has Etisalat energised Egypt?
The launch of Etisalat in Egypt in the second quarter of 2007 was much anticipated, not least because more than eight years of duopoly in Egypt had seen the rate of mobile ownership climb to just one-quarter. At first glance, the addition of a third player appears to have energised the market, with net additions topping 3 million for the first time ever in Q2, and Q3 setting a new record of 3.73 million. Mobinil Awarded 3G License in Egypt
Egypt's mobinil has confirmed recent reports that it has been granted a 3G license by the Egyptian regulator, NTRA. mobinil acquired the 15-year 3G license against EGP 3.34 billion (US$610 million) in addition to 2.4% of its total annual revenues. more
