Survey Finds Substantial Dual SIM Usage in Saudi Arabia
A new Arab Advisors Group survey of cellular users in Saudi Arabia has revealed that a massive 39.6% of cellular users have more than one SIM connection. Of these, over half choose to have the second mobile line from a different network operator. The need for separate business and personal lines is the main reason for having more than one line (53.9% of those with more than one cellular line). Cost savings was a reason for 22.8% of respondents with more than one mobile line. more

GSM Coverage Expands in Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Arabian GSM network operator, mobily says that it has completed the first and second phases of its independent network expansion in the Kingdom, and has started the third phase on the network expansion which aims to cover the villages, suburban areas and roads between villages, that have not been covered by mobily network. The expansion is planned to be finished by the end of this year. more

Huawei Technologies says that it has signed a contract with Saudi Arabia's mobily for the construction of a UMTS network. According to the contract, Huawei will supply its New Generation Node B solution as part of mobily's plan to deploy a UMTS terrestrial radio access network (UTRAN) based on High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). more

Saudi Arabia's Fixed Lines Growth Stalls As GSM Booms
Propelled to new heights by competition, GSM lines in Saudi Arabia grew at a high 44.8% rate in the first eleven months of 2005 to reach 13.3 million. Fixed line, however, grew at a meager 2.5% in the first nine months of 2005 according to a report from the Arab Advisors Group. During the period between 2002 and 2004, Saudi Telecom's mainlines subscribers grew at a low CAGR of 5.5%, reaching around 3.695 million subscribers. After witnessing a slight increase in the growth rates in 2003 and 2004, The first nine months of year 2005, showed the mainlines growth rate is to decline again, as the mainlines grew by 92 thousand translating into a 2.5% growth in the first nine months of 2005. more
