DragonWave Wins Italian WiMAX Backhaul Contract
Ethernet backhaul vendor, DragonWave has announced that Italy's Linkem will deploy its Horizon Compact radios for backhaul in their new WiMAX network. Linkem provides both nationwide Wi-Fi Hotspot services and Wireless DSL services in Italy. At the beginning of 2008 the company consolidated this position by acquiring 13 regional WiMAX licenses to provide mobile broadband coverage to 80% of the Italian population. more

Carriers name Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Huawei top mobile WiMAX vendors
Carriers recently surveyed by analyst firm Infonetics Research named Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, and Huawei as the "top vendors" in the mobile WiMAX equipment market. Nine additional vendors received votes for top vendor from a smaller number of carriers surveyed. more

Femtocells – to Be or Not to Be?
Although mobile operators are increasingly optimistic about femtocells, there are many doubts circulating around this new technology as it struggles to resolve key challenges such as functionality and cost. Operators believe that they are capable of cutting costs and retaining more customers, but proof remains to be seen. In the last femtocells study, Frost & Sullivan is skeptical, outlining multiple challenges, that do not look like they could be resolved by the end of 2008. more

DragonWave Wins Venezuelan WiMAX Contract
DragonWave has announced that Omnivision has standardized on it for licensed-frequency wireless backhaul as it expands its WiMAX service offering into markets across Venezuela. The first mobile WiMAX operator in Latin America, Omnivision introduced broadband data services of up to 6 Mbps to business and residential customers in Venezuela's capital city, Caracas, in 2007. Omnivision subsequently has initiated a nationwide expansion of its service footprint, with an announced target of 2.5 million subscribers by 2013. more

Motorola Demonstrates Mobile WiMAX Handoff in Asia Pacific
Motorola has held its first mobile WiMAX demonstration with live handoffs between access points to the public in Asia Pacific. The demonstration is conducted through a mobile WiMAX network set up at Motorola's facility in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore. Attendees joining a bus tour are able to experience various mobile applications while moving past access point sites along the bus route. Additionally, as the WiMAX connection is extended through an air router, guests will also be able to experience mobile broadband through their own WiFi enabled devices. more

Telsima Announces Contracts with Telefonica and Vodacom
Telsima Corp. has announced multimillion dollar contracts with Telefonica in Latin America and Vodacom in Africa for the supply of TelsiNex DCME - which increases the capacity of toll-grade voice calls over circuit switched networks such as Long Distance International network connections and GSM networks. more

Backhaul for Sprint Nextel and the WiMax Buildout
FiberTower Corp., a wireless backhaul services provider, today announced that it had entered into an agreement with Sprint Nextel to provide backhaul services in seven of the wireless carrier's initial WiMax launch markets. FiberTower says that it is unable to disclose terms of the agreement as it is subject to confidentiality agreements. However, the Company can disclose that Sprint Nextel's deployment is based on providing Ethernet-based backhaul, a first for any mobile backhaul provider. more
