3G-4G to Account for 30% of Global Wireless Subscriptions by 2013

At the end of 2008, only 11% of worldwide wireless subscriptions were 3G. By the end of 2013, the percentage of 3G and 4G subscriptions will reach 30%, reports In-Stat. This trend is reflected in fourth quarter 2008 wireless infrastructure contract awards.  more

Mobile WiMAX market up 5% in 4Q08; Cisco, Huawei begin challenging market leaders

Communications market research firm Infonetics Research released the fourth quarter edition of its WiMAX report this week, noting that the overall WiMAX equipment and device market held steady in 4Q08 over 3Q08 at $275 million, as the 802.16e mobile WiMAX segment increased 5% to counter a slight dip in the 802.16d fixed WiMAX segment.  more

WiMAX Has Early Lead Over LTE in Wireless 4G Race

Comstar Soft Launches WiMAX Network in Moscow

Russia's Comstar has soft launched a wireless broadband network in Moscow, which is based on standard 802.16e WiMAX technology. The full commercial launch of the wireless network using the 2.5-2.7 GHz frequency range and based on Nortel technological solutions is expected to be implemented in the second quarter of 2009.  more

Alvarion Wins Costa Rican WiMAX Contract

Alvarion  has been awarded a $6 million contract by ICE (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad), Costa RicaĆ's incumbent telco. Under the terms of the agreement Alvarion will implement a turnkey project to provide advanced broadband services, deploying its 4Motion solution with its WiMAX Forum Certified BreezeMAX 2500 platform.  more

Nortel Providing WiMAX Kit for Moscow Network

Russia based Comstar has selected Nortel equipment to develop the first mobile WiMAX network in Moscow. 160 base stations are expected to be built in Moscow by the end of 2008. The overall investments in the project are expected to amount to approximately US$20 million in 2008.  more
