DragonWave Wins Italian WiMAX Backhaul Contract

Ethernet backhaul vendor, DragonWave has announced that Italy's Linkem will deploy its Horizon Compact radios for backhaul in their new WiMAX network. Linkem provides both nationwide Wi-Fi Hotspot services and Wireless DSL services in Italy. At the beginning of 2008 the company consolidated this position by acquiring 13 regional WiMAX licenses to provide mobile broadband coverage to 80% of the Italian population.  more

Cisco Powers Mobile WiMAX Network in Moscow and St. Petersburg

Russia's Scartel (trading as Yota) has launched a Mobile WiMAX network within the Sadovoye Ring in Moscow and at the Vassilyevsky Island and Petrogradsky District in St. Petersburg. The entire Yota core transport network is powered by Cisco service provider technologies.  more

Mobile WiMAX Network Soft-Launched in Tokyo

Japan's UQ Communications has announced that it will launch a Mobile WiMAX network covering Tokyo (all 23 wards), Yokohama, and Kawasaki by the end of this month. The service will be sold under the UQ WiMAX brand name.  more

WiMAX Deployments Hit by Economic Downturn

BWA/WiMAX subscribers worldwide reached 2.68 million in Q3 2008 - a more modest 13% growth over the first quarter and a 91% increase over Q3 2007, according to the 6th issue of the WiMAXCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis.  more

Nortel and Alvarion to Break-Up WiMAX Partnership

Nortel, which is currently seeking bankruptcy protection, and Alvarion are to break up their WiMAX joint venture - which was only entered into last June. Alvarion says that it is analyzing the details of actions it will take to mitigate the impact on its business, and expects to provide more information about these actions during its fourth quarter 2008 financial results conference call next month  more

Mobile WiMAX Network Launched in Libya

Libya Telecom & Technology (LTT), Libya's main and biggest Internet service provider (ISP) has launched a mobile WiMAX network - covering some 300,000 potential subscribers in eighteen cities. The WiMAX service was officially launched by Mohammad Al Gaddafi at the Libya Telecom & Technology head office in Tripoli.  more

Carriers name Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Huawei top mobile WiMAX vendors

Carriers recently surveyed by analyst firm Infonetics Research named Motorola, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, and Huawei as the "top vendors" in the mobile WiMAX equipment market. Nine additional vendors received votes for top vendor from a smaller number of carriers surveyed.  more
