Nokia and Yahoo Confirm Mobile Internet Services Partnership

After a couple of leaks at the weekend, Nokia and Yahoo have confirmed they are to work closer together in mobile web services. As part of the alliance Nokia will be the exclusive provider of Yahoo's maps and navigation services, integrating Ovi Maps across Yahoo properties, branded as "powered by Ovi." In addition, Yahoo will become the exclusive provider of Nokia's Ovi Mail and Ovi Chat services branded as "Ovi Mail / Ovi Chat powered by Yahoo!"  more

For mobile commerce to gain critical mass, consumers must be able to at least access the Internet from their mobile phones. More than 80 million US mobile phone users will access the Internet from their device in 2010, eMarketer forecasts. That's nearly 35% of all mobile phone users and almost 27% of the US population. By 2013, almost 50% of mobile phone subscribers will have Internet access.  more

iPhones Dominate Australian Mobile Data Consumption

An Australian Mobile Internet Insight report published by analytics firm, Amethon has found that browsing habits and data consumption for users of the new 3G Apple device is significantly higher than the average mobile device. The report, which provides insight into Australia's mobile web browsing activities for August, says that the iPhone completely dominated data consumption behaviour and iPhone generated traffic was growing at nine percent per day.  more

Sprint Nextel Offers Software Upgrade for HTC Smartphones

Sprint Nextel is offering a software update for the HTC supplied Touch and Mogul smartphones to add support for EV-DO Rev. A data speeds as well as Windows Mobile 6.1. The upgrade also includes enhanced GPS capabilities, allowing support of popular applications such as Sprint Navigation. Sprint Navigation provides audio and visual turn-by-turn directions, more than 10 million local listings, and one-click traffic rerouting, similar to an in-vehicle GPS system.  more

Consumer Demand for Entertainment and Data Services Will Drive Smartphone Sales

Navigation, email and Internet access top the list of features that consumers look for when purchasing new wireless phones, according to a new consumer research study released today by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The study found that 40 percent of American adults plan to purchase a new wireless handset within the year. Although only 11 percent of adult cell phone owners say they own a smartphone, the number is likely to grow in the near future as consumer awareness of and demand for wireless services including music, video and Internet access steadily increase.  more

Opera to Port their Mobile Web Browser to BREW Handsets

India's Tata Teleservices has secured an agreement with the Norway based, Opera Software to port their Java based mobile web browser onto Brew-enabled handsets which will be supplied by Huawei. The new browser will also be multi-lingual to support the various local languages in India.  more

Handset navigation users will reach 43 million in 2012

According to a new research report by Berg Insight the number of mobile subscribers accessing maps and downloading routes using their mobile handsets in Europe and the USA is expected to grow from 4 million users in 2007 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 60.8% to reach 43 million users in 2012. more
