Canada to Ban TV Channels from Restricting Mobile TV Services

­Canada's broadcast regulator, the CRTC has proposed new rules covering TV channels that would ban the companies from from offering television programs on an exclusive basis to their mobile or Internet subscribers. Under the new rules, any program broadcast on television, including hockey games and other live events, must be made available to competitors under fair and reasonable terms.  more

Jamaican Network Launches Mobile TV Service

­Jamaica based mobile network, Lime (formerly Cable & Wireless) has become the first operator in the Caribbean to introduce mobile TV. The new service provides mobile customers with the opportunity to watch a range of digital TV channels, or listen to digital radio, through their handset. Handsets can also be plugged into television sets meaning that a number of households which could not access digital TV can receive channels for the first time.  more

Mobile TV Venture Commits to Roll Out TV Service in 20 Markets by the end of 2011

Mobile Content Venture (MCV), a joint venture of 12 USA based television broadcasters, have announced a commitment to upgrade TV stations in 20 regions in order to deliver live video to portable devices. By late 2011, the venture will deliver mobile video service in markets representing more than 40% of the US population. The service will initially consist of at least two ad-supported free-to-consumer channels in each market. Additional channels and markets are expected to be added over time.  more

Alcatel-Lucent Test Mobile TV Services in Ukraine

Alcatel-Lucent and Ukrainian Television and Radio Company ETHER announced they have successfully completed field tests that demonstrated for the first time ever in a live network the viability of the DVB-SH format (Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite services on Handhelds) using the UHF band - a band typically used for residential television broadcasting and mobile broadcasting DVB-H. This test showed an increase of coverage by DVB-SH through the UHF band (compared with legacy DVB-H networks and technologies).  more

US Broadcast Groups to Develop National Mobile TV Service

Twelve US broadcast firms have announced plans to form a standalone joint venture to develop a new national mobile content service. Utilizing existing broadcast spectrum, the service will allow member companies to provide content to mobile devices, including live and on-demand video, local and national news from print and electronic sources, as well as sports and entertainment programming.  more
