Chinese Handset Production Growth Down to Single Figures

China's CCID Consulting has reported that after a period of rapid growth over the past few years, the Chinese mobile handset chips market experienced a conspicuous decline in 2008. The research firm predicts that the scale of Chinese mobile phone chips market is expected to reach RMB 110 billion (US$16 billion), up by 6%, down to single-digit growth for the first time.  more

Europe Considering an Import Tax on Smartphones

The European Commission is expected to present a proposal this week to charge customs duties on mobile phones, by moving ‘sophisticatedÃ' phones into a dutiable customs category. Mobile phones with increased functionality, such as GPS receivers and mobile TV would face an import tax of up to 14% under the proposals.  more

Almost 40% of smart phones shipping in EMEA have GPS integrated

A new report Canalys finds that growth slowed in the smart phone market in EMEA in Q2, but total shipments of 12.6 million still made it the second biggest quarter ever in volume terms. Canalys estimates that smart phones represented 13% of all mobile phone shipments.  more

China's Handset Shipment Growth to Slow in 2008

Mobile handset shipments from manufacturers headquartered in China grew dramatically in 2007, reaching 229 million units for the year, representing a 76.2 percent annual growth rate from 130 million in 2006. However, this rate of growth will slow considerably in 2008, dropping to about 19.7 percent to reach 274 million units, according to iSuppli.  more

DoCoMo Shows Off 23 New Mobile Phones

Japan's DoCoMo has announced today 23 new handsets available in a total of 75 colors in the new 905i and 705i series. All 10 handsets in the 905i series are variously equipped for advanced functions and convenient services, including 3G/GSM international roaming, HSDPA, "One-segment" mobile TV, GPS location information, enhanced "2in1" combining the capabilities of two phones in one handset, and the DCMX credit card and iD credit payment services.  more
