Mobile TV License Granted in the United Arab Emirates

­The UAE's telecoms regulator, the TRA has awarded a Mobile TV license to a consortium that includes both mobile networks, for a payment of AED 17 million (US$4.6 million). The license is for ten years, with a five-year exclusivity period.  more

GSMA Endorses 3GPP's Integrated Mobile Broadcast Standard

­The GSM Association says that it has endorsed a new 3GPP standard, Integrated Mobile Broadcast (IMB), which should enable spectrally-efficient delivery of broadcast services, based on techniques that are aligned with existing FDD WCDMA but also allowing deployment in TDD spectrum. This also allows for the smooth handover between IMB delivery and existing deployed technology.  more

China Telecom Offers Video News to 3G Subscribers in Shanghai

China's official Xinhua News Agency says that it has launched a mobile TV service broadcasting news reports to China Telecom's 3G subscribers in Shanghai. Xinhua will provide China Telecom Shanghai Branch with exclusive news about the Shanghai Expo, analysis reports and various news items, while the latter will offer telecommunications services, according to the deal.  more

Motorola Win Polish Mobile TV Contract

Motorola says that it has won a Mobile TV deployment contract in Poland. The network, operated by INFO-TV-FM will be deployed in Warsaw and 9 other Polish cities, by the end of 2009. The Motorola Mobile TV solution, comprising video headend and transmitters, is based on DVB-H and OMA BCAST standards.  more

EU Scraps Plans for an Import Duty on Smartphones

The European Union has cancelled plans for a controversial import tax that could have pushed up the price of smartphones by 14%. In a statement, Swedish Trade Minister Ewa Bjorling said that the majority of member countries of the EU had voted against the plan.  more

First CDMA Phone with Analogue TV Receiver

Chinese CDMA handset manufacturer, Guizhou Zhenhua Moint Communication has launched a new handset that incorporates an analogue TV receiver. The handset is the first to bring Telegent's free-to-air mobile TV feature to CDMA operator networks and is now launched in China Telecom stores in a number of provinces throughout China.  more
