MTS Expands Russian 3G Coverage
Russia's Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) says that it has launched 3G networks in Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, bringing the total count of cities covered to ten. MTS launched the first pan-regional 3G network in Russia in May 2008 in St. Petersburg followed by Sochi, Yekaterinburg and Kazan. In August 2008, MTS expanded its 3G network to Nizhniy Novgorod. In September 2008, the Company brought next-generation networks to Novosibirsk and Norilsk, the two large industrial centers in Siberia, and Vladivostok, the largest city in the Russian Far East. more

Russian Operator Expands to the Frigid North
Russia's Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) says that it has launched a GSM 900/1800
network in the Chukotka region in the Far East of Russia. Currently, the Company's
switching system in the region's capital Anadyr can service up to 300,000
numbers, although the local population barely tops 55,000. Increasing exploitation of mineral reserves should bring in far higher numbers in the form of migrant workers though.
