MTS Slumps to Q1 Loss on Foreign Exchange Losses

Russia's Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has reported that its first-quarter revenues dropped by 24% to US$1.8 billion, due to local currency depreciation and seasonal factors. The company also reported a net loss for the quarter of $57.7 million, compared to a profit of US$610 million a year ago. The loss was due to US$462.4 non-cash foreign exchange losses through US GAAP translation of US dollar-denominated debt.  more

MTS Expands Russian 3G Coverage

Russia's Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) says that it has launched 3G networks in Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, bringing the total count of cities covered to ten. MTS launched the first pan-regional 3G network in Russia in May 2008 in St. Petersburg followed by Sochi, Yekaterinburg and Kazan. In August 2008, MTS expanded its 3G network to Nizhniy Novgorod. In September 2008, the Company brought next-generation networks to Novosibirsk and Norilsk, the two large industrial centers in Siberia, and Vladivostok, the largest city in the Russian Far East.  more
