Europe Licenses Two Mobile Satellite Operators

The European Commission says that it has selected two operators, Inmarsat Ventures and Solaris Mobile, to provide mobile satellite services across Europe. New CEO for European Mobile Satellite Services Joint Venture

Eutelsat Communications and SES ASTRA have announced the appointment of Steve Maine as CEO of their jointly-owned venture offering Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) in S-Band. The Joint Venture, known under the name "Solaris", will commercialise the first satellite infrastructure in Europe for broadcasting video, radio and data to mobile devices and vehicle receivers as well as a range of interactive mobile services.  more

Mobile TV Trial to Start in Italy

Alcatel-Lucent, the mobile operator 3 Italia and Italian public broadcaster RAI have announced that they are launching the first trial of Mobile TV based on the DVB-SH standard in Italy. The trial, based on Alcatel-Lucent's Unlimited Mobile TV solution, uses for the first time in the world a multi-layer DVB-SH terrestrial network blending low-power transmitters from a mobile operator and medium-power transmitters from a broadcaster.  more
